At WE CAN, we believe that family is not only defined by blood, but by connection, care, and shared responsibility. Our Family Matters Programme embraces this broader understanding—creating inclusive spaces where every individual, regardless of their role or background, has a place to belong, grow, and be supported.
Rooted in strong spiritual values, this programme seeks to rebuild the social fabric of communities impacted by crime, poverty, and deep-seated societal challenges. We work intentionally to restore dignity, strengthen relationships, and create pathways for healing—because strong communities begin with strong, connected families.
Our approach is multi-faceted and intergenerational, addressing both immediate needs and long-term transformation. We create safe, equitable platforms where families can confront their realities, process intergenerational trauma, and actively reshape the trajectory of their lives.
Our Family Strengthening initiative focuses on positive parenting and holistic family development, supporting mothers, fathers, children, and extended family members alike.
We walk alongside families to:
Strengthen relationships and improve communication
Build emotional resilience and supportive home environments
Equip parents and caregivers with practical tools for nurturing and guidance
Create spaces for healing, reflection, and personal growth
Through community-based support systems—including family constellation groups—we help restore hope, rebuild faith, and cultivate the courage needed to overcome the many forms of poverty that families face.
We believe that when a family is supported, seen, and strengthened, the ripple effect is felt throughout the entire community.
Girl Power Empowers is dedicated to nurturing and protecting girls aged 8–17, equipping them with the knowledge, confidence, and voice to navigate the complexities of their world.
Through this initiative, girls are supported to:
Recognize their worth and develop inner leadership
Speak out against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and advocate for their safety
Understand reproductive health and their rights
Use social platforms as tools for positive change and storytelling
Respond to social, cultural, environmental, and economic challenges with resilience
GPE is not only about protection—it is about raising a generation of courageous young women who lead with purpose and hope.
Honouring Our Elders is a celebration and restoration of Indigenous and spiritual knowledge carried through generations. We recognize elders—particularly widows—as vital pillars of families and communities, whose contributions are often overlooked.
Through this initiative, we:
Create platforms to value and preserve lived knowledge and wisdom
Foster mutual learning between generations through shared experiences
Promote dignity, respect, and appreciation for elders
Address the social isolation and marginalization many elders face
Celebrate their role as custodians of culture, resilience, and heritage
Using approaches such as appreciative inquiry, we cultivate a culture where wisdom is honoured, voices are heard, and every generation grows together.
At the heart of Family Matters is a commitment to ensuring that no family member is left behind. We recognize that true transformation happens when healing is collective—when children, parents, and elders are all part of the journey.
This is more than a programme. It is a movement toward restoring dignity, rebuilding relationships, and strengthening the very foundation of our communities.
Because when families heal, communities rise—and the future is reimagined.
Women Empowerment Programme: From Gift to Livelihood
Our Women Empowerment Programme is rooted in a simple but powerful belief: every woman carries inherent gifts, talents, and potential that can be transformed into sustainable livelihood—regardless of her level of formal education.
We focus on empowering grassroots women who are often excluded from formal employment opportunities, supporting them to recognize their worth, refine their skills, and turn what is already in their hands into viable economic opportunities. Through community-based hubs, we create safe, nurturing spaces where women are equipped, supported, and inspired to grow.
Our approach goes beyond traditional training. We walk alongside women as they:
Identify and develop their natural talents and creative abilities
Transform ideas into practical, income-generating projects
Access relevant markets to showcase and sell their products and produce
Build confidence, business awareness, and financial understanding
Connect with mentorship, networks, and opportunities for growth
At the heart of our work is Social Enterprise Development—where community passion is shaped into purposeful, sustainable ventures. We support women not just to start projects, but to build self-sustaining micro-enterprises that contribute to their households and strengthen local economies.
We believe in moving from dependency to dignity—from hand-outs to hand-ups. By nurturing local talent and creating pathways to market access, we enable women to become active economic participants, job creators, and agents of change within their communities.
This is about more than income. It is about restoring confidence, affirming identity, and building a future where women are self-reliant, resilient, and equipped to lead change—starting where they are, with what they have.
Our Arts and Culture Programme is a vibrant expression of unity in diversity—celebrating the richness of cultures within our communities and creating spaces where people can see, hear, and understand one another beyond their differences.
We believe that art has the power to transcend barriers of poverty, race, religion, gender, and creed. Through creative expression, communities are able to come together, share their stories, and carry forward a message of hope, identity, and collective belonging.
At its core, this programme creates opportunities for individuals and groups to organise, collaborate, and showcase their gifts and talents—turning creativity into a powerful tool for both social connection and economic opportunity.
We work intentionally with youth at risk, vulnerable individuals, and elders—many of whom are often unheard or overlooked—by providing safe, inclusive platforms where their voices can be expressed through the arts.
Through partnerships with:
Schools
Community arts groups
Arts colleges and institutions
Independent artists and creatives
we identify, nurture, and support talent that can be developed for both personal growth and broader social impact.
Our programme enables participants to:
Discover and refine their creative talents
Participate in theatre, film, visual arts, and cultural productions
Use storytelling as a tool for healing and awareness
Showcase their work to diverse audiences
Access pathways into the creative economy
We see the arts not only as expression, but as transformation.
By supporting artists to develop their craft and connect with opportunities, we contribute to building sustainable livelihoods while also addressing social issues through storytelling and performance. Each production becomes more than a performance—it becomes a message, a conversation, and a catalyst for change within the community.
The impact of this programme is reflected in the lives of those who have embraced their creative calling:
A young woman who courageously transitioned from a career in law to pursue the arts is now a nationally recognised actress on Suidooster, with award nominations and roles in multiple film and theatre productions. With the support of the organisation, she has successfully delivered four theatre productions—using her platform to inspire others.
Our Board Chairperson, who once worked in finance, has redefined her path as a freelance creative in the film and theatre industry—excelling as an art director, make-up artist, and discovering her voice as a painter.
The Founder, transitioning from executive leadership, has stepped into the world of storytelling and production—using the arts as a medium to amplify community narratives and drive meaningful change.
These journeys reflect what is possible when talent is recognised, nurtured, and given space to grow.
Our Arts and Culture Programme is more than a platform—it is a movement of connection, healing, and opportunity. It reminds us that despite our differences, we all carry stories worth telling and gifts worth sharing.
By bringing people together through creativity, we are not only building artists—we are building communities that see each other, celebrate each other, and rise together.
Our Health Programme is built on a holistic belief: a healthy mind, a healthy body, and a healthy spirit are all essential to true well-being. We recognise that health is not only physical—it is emotional, social, and spiritual—and that lasting healing happens when all these dimensions are nurtured together.
We are committed to building healthier communities where access to healthcare is both available and affordable, especially for those who are most marginalised. Through community-based approaches, we bring health awareness, support, and services closer to where people live—breaking down barriers that often prevent individuals and families from seeking care.
A key focus of our programme is to demystify and dismantle the stigma and discrimination associated with chronic health conditions such as:
HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis
Cancer
Diabetes
Hypertension
We create safe spaces for education, dialogue, and support—helping communities move from fear and silence to understanding and acceptance. By normalising these conditions, we empower individuals to seek help early, adhere to treatment, and live with dignity.
We actively partner with men’s organisations to promote awareness and responsibility around men’s health. This includes:
Encouraging regular health screenings and preventative care
Supporting education around reproductive and sexual health
Promoting medical male circumcision as part of broader health protection strategies
By engaging men as active participants in their own well-being, we contribute to healthier families and stronger communities.
We understand that a healthy body begins with proper nutrition. That is why we support women-led soup kitchens to evolve into nutrition kitchens—spaces where food provision is combined with education and empowerment.
Through collaboration with professional nutritionists, healthcare workers, and community facilitators, we:
Provide training on balanced, nutritious meal preparation
Promote food security and sustainable practices
Equip women with knowledge that strengthens both household health and economic opportunity
Young people are at the heart of building healthier futures. Our programme works closely with youth care workers and schools to:
Address teenage pregnancy through education and support
Provide open, age-appropriate discussions on reproductive health
Equip young people with knowledge to make informed life choices
Create safe spaces for dialogue, guidance, and mentorship
Our work recognises the deep connection between individual health, family well-being, and community strength. By integrating physical health, mental wellness, nutrition, and spiritual care, we support families to create healthier home environments that nurture growth and resilience.
This is more than a health programme—it is a movement toward restoring dignity, promoting prevention, and ensuring that every person, regardless of circumstance, has the opportunity to live a healthy, whole, and empowered life.
Because when health is restored in the home, transformation flows into the community—and the future becomes stronger for all.
Our Community Development Programme is rooted in a transformative belief: communities are not empty spaces waiting to be fixed—they are rich with assets, relationships, knowledge, and potential.
We work to empower especially women within communities to become active change agents—leaders who shape decisions, influence outcomes, and take ownership of the future of their environments. We challenge the narrative that solutions must come from outside, and instead support residents to recognize their own power, voice, and agency.
We believe that true development happens when communities are not only consulted, but actively lead.
Through this programme, we support residents to:
Understand and exercise their constitutional rights
Participate meaningfully in local decision-making processes
Engage with municipalities, government departments, and key stakeholders
Build strong relationships with networks, cultural groups, and businesses
Advocate for improved access to opportunities such as housing, healthcare, and employment
Our approach ensures that communities are not passive recipients of services, but informed, organized, and empowered participants shaping their own development.
At the heart of our work is Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD)—a strengths-based approach that identifies and mobilizes what already exists within the community.
We work alongside residents to:
Map local talents, skills, and resources
Recognize informal networks and community support systems
Build on cultural knowledge and lived experience
Connect existing assets to opportunities for growth
By shifting the focus from needs to strengths, communities begin to see themselves not as lacking, but as capable and resourceful.
We believe that every community is sitting on a “goldmine” of untapped talent. Our programme bridges the gap between potential and opportunity through:
Skills Capacity Building & Technical Training
Providing practical, industry-relevant skills development
Strengthening existing talents into market-ready competencies
Equipping individuals—especially women—with tools for economic participation
Social Enterprise Development
Supporting the creation of community-owned businesses
Transforming local ideas into sustainable income-generating ventures
Reducing dependency on external funding by building self-reliant economic systems
Our goal is not to create temporary projects, but to nurture thriving, self-sustaining ecosystems where communities:
Own their development journey
Drive local economic growth
Make informed decisions for their collective future
Build resilience across social and economic challenges
We believe that when communities recognize their own value and organize around their strengths, they move from survival to sustainability—and from dependency to dignity.
This programme is about more than development—it is about restoring power, voice, and ownership.
When women rise as leaders, when residents engage with confidence, and when communities determine their own outcomes, transformation becomes lasting and generational.
Because the future of a community should always be shaped by the people who call it home.
